This morning's first walk-in has prompted a post I've been meaning to make for ages! How to get herbs into kids.
Having raised two very stubborn lads, I've tried it all. Here are my faves:
Teas:
- Brew the prescribed herbal tea, sweeten with apple juice or honey, freeze into lolly moulds or ice cube trays. Be aware of sticking to the dosage (make up the remainder of the volume needed to fill a lolly mould with juice/smoothie if needed)
- Add a peppermint or berry flavoured teabag to the prescribed herbal tea to make it more palatable.
- Allow tea to cool and add a little sparkling water. This is especially good for kids who are raised without fizzy drinks as they think it's a real treat. I got away with a fizzy vitamin c tablet and/or carbonated water as "pop" for many many years with my boys!
- Glycerites can sweeten the deal! These are concentrated alcohol-free herbal extracts (similar to tinctures). I stock as many as I can in store and will happily advise anyone how to make their own. Or come along to a workshop.
- Herbal gummies - frequently made with herbal syrups and/or tinctures, these tasty little treats are often seen as sweets by kids thank you Jodie for the reminder!!
- Some herbs (eg for eczema) can be absorbed through the skin, how about making them into a bath ball, bath bomb, or frozen ice play-tray for the bath?
And if you're still struggling to get teas into your child - we can do tinctures (concentrated liquid herb extracts) when really needed for little ones.
